One of the lowest priced options with a high level of quality
Third party monitoring and a short money back guarantee
Bay Alarm Medical offers one of the lowest monthly costs, but still provides the same level of service as most of the companies on our list.
The equipment is small and unobtrusive, meaning that it won’t make people stare while you wear your pendant.
Range is decent and there are add-on options for even more protection, but you only pay for the ones you want.
The reps that take your emergency calls are trained, friendly and always ready.
Bay Alarm is one of our favorite medical alert systems, especially when the budget is a bit tighter. Although they are cheaper, you get virtually no loss in service. There is a slight difference in equipment, but that’s more than manageable.
Even though Bay Alarm Medical is one of the least expensive systems on the market, the features and service are still great.
There are a ton of plans and options to choose from that will ultimately allow you to get the exact level of service you or your loved ones need. Here’s a quick look at the basic plans offered:
- In-Home: This is the basic coverage that only allows for the base unit and pendant. Service is land line based and only available in your home. The price is low, even if you pay monthly, but the cheapest rate is the “semi-annual” plan billed every six months.
- In-Home Cellular: Since land lines are notorious for being unreliable in many cases, there is a cellular connection plan. It’s priced competitively and you have the ability to add an automatic fall detection pendant for an additional monthly fee.
- GPS Mobile Help: Here you get a device that allows you to call for help just about anywhere. The GPS can help authorities locate individuals who need assistance. The device is relatively small, but not wearable and there is a one-time fee to purchase it.
Past these individual plans, there are two bundles available. You can get in home or in home cellular along with the GPS mobile device for a combined lower fee because they are purchased together.
These plans are also discounted further if you prepay for up to six months of service.
Both the in home and cellular plans come with a base unit, a help button in the form of a pendant and 24/7 monitoring service.
The land line unit is on the bulky side and needs to be plugged into the wall and a working phone line.
The cellular does need to be plugged into the electricity, but the communication is handled by the AT&T network. If you have poor service from this mobile provider in your area you don’t want to waste your money on this plan.
Mobile GPS is also on the AT&T network. As far as we can tell, the only device that is available for this plan fits in the palm of your hand and looks like a garage door opener.
You have to carry it around all the time, or it’s no good to protect you.
This inconvenience could be a problem if you’re active and don’t want something extra to carry in your purse or pocket.
It’s a slight issue and other companies do offer mobile wearable tech like pendants and wristbands, but they aren’t to the caliber of Bay Alarm’s service.
If you or your loved ones are from a different country and aren’t fully fluent in English, there is a decent translation service that is available to all users. You have to specify the language and the rep who first takes your call will be happy to help.
Environmental monitoring is also available. Fire, carbon monoxide and smoke detection can be included in your service for an additional monthly fee. This could be extremely helpful for those who are hard of hearing.
The monitoring service will alert the authorities without your loved ones having to hear the alarm.
Bay Alarm Medical has a great reputation for service. A respectable customer support page on their website along with a toll-free number number available for general questions and tech support.
The option to live chat automatically pops up when visiting the site and they also have a quick email form that you can fill out for service or technical questions
They list their office hours as 7am-5pm Monday-Friday. Saturday and Sunday hours are available from 9am-4pm.
Where Bay Alarm Medical separates themselves from the pack is their FAQ section and collection of Q&A videos. Many elderly customers are becoming more web-savvy and want this type of intel.
Bay Alarm Medical does not operate their own monitor centers, but instead partners with a U.S. based third party company. They run two monitoring centers which are UL listed and CSAA certified.
Both monitoring centers are duplicates, so if one goes offline the other will still provide coverage.
All call and monitoring centers use Language Line Services to provide users with translation of over 170 different languages.
Bay Alarm Service is compatible with all standard phone lines, cable providers (Comcast, Time Warner, Cox) and VOIP solutions (AT&T, Verizon). They also provide GPS solutions for on the go users.
Monitored fire, smoke, and CO2 detection is also available for an additional monthly fee.
